'87 overheating...??

looking to buy an 87 but it has overheating probs. the owner believes the water pump is shot. i am wondering if there could be something he hasnt caught, burping, thermo, ??? has anyone had any probs with a water pump that has just quit or clogged lines/radiator? would appreciate it!

i believe that if your pump is shot, it'll make noise...
you could pull the cap and run the car...see if the water moves at all. i would check the coolant and check to make sure that the coolant was bled properly. i would check ignition timing. i would use a Toyota thermostat and coolant (with distilled water). you should probably also use a good coolant flush before making any assumptions about the cooling system.

i would expect sound out of the pump...maybe a pinched line somewhere between the radiator and the engine?

agreed, i would flush the cooling system and install a new thermastat and refill the coolant before jumping to a conclusion.
