Clutch Cost of Replacement/difficulty

Hey, I just bought an MR2 and the clutch needs to be replaced, it has 100k on it so im sure it is ready to be replaced.

(HAVE YOU DONE IT?)
I want to know how hard is it to do it yourself, if you have done it. The estimated hours taken to replace the clutch plate. And some of the odd tools (if any) were needed to do it.

(DID YOU GET SOMEONE TO DO IT?)
Also if you have had someone else do it, what is the going price to get a replacement done?

Thanks

for something like that you need a shop manual. also, you would be much better off if you have a lift you can put the car up on. You most likely will have to take the transmission off which will involve removing all kinds of things. Call up a transmission shop and ask them what they'll charge you to replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel. DO NOT TAKE IT TO A DEALER!!!

replacing the clutch is a chore.. most shops will take 6 hrs even with the lift and all the equipment. you will have to remove the left rear axle, some of the suspension linkage, trans and then the clutch. maybe the flywheel too if it needs to be turned..I would be sure you needed a new clutch before tackling this. I have 145k on my abused clutch and it's still going strong..I will usually have the shop do it. let's see-6 hrs labor @$65.00/hr + parts=$$$.00?....have fun

depends on the gen i guess and your ability to work on cars..... my 87 that i swapped an e51 (very heavy tranny) & ae101 4agze into.... the first time i pulled the tranny to have the flywheel resurfaced all labor took about 15 hours or so (pulled all driver side suspension, axles, starter, tranny)..... had to do it again the week after and it took less than 5 hours altogether (tranny out & back in)

but i do have a hoist, jackstands, cinderblocks, and airtools at my place

i think i set the world record with the E51 in that i had the trans out of the car the first time (during this job) in under 2 hours. and from the ground going up into the car (laying on my back and with some help, a fellow MR2OC member and i had the trans up into the car and slightly bolted in in less than 5 minutes. we then had to pull it back out (long, long story) and then put it back up in 4 minutes.

that being said... if you have to ask about the difficulty and assuming that you may have some buddies to help and all of the PROPER tools, then you might be able to finish it in a weekend, but i would start no later than friday since you will want the flywheel resurfaced. be ready to take the flywheel to the machine shop on friday if possible. make sure to order your parts early (prior to the job including rear main seal, clutch, clutch cover, throw-out bearing, axle seals, and have all of the 'other' stuff (such as gear lube, BGB, and stuff) around.

ah! and it's nice to have an engine support brace around. i made one...makes midship life a dream!

the clutch itself is easy to replace, just need the alignment tool (most kits come with) but as mentioned previously getting the tranny out is the bitch. one quote i got was $400 plus just to drop the trans.

well, if you go to replace the clutch and just so happen NOT to find an alignment tool (which in my area is now a total tool of the oh so distant past), you can use a nice locking extension and a nice deep socket which will fit inside of the clutch splines tightly.
