Synchro Question

Hello All
I'm new around here, and in all fairness I technically shouldn't be posting on this forum yet. I don't currently own an MR2, however I may be purchasing a '92 turbo later tonight. I've been told that the only mechanical problem with the car is that the 1-2 and 2-3 gear synchros are just starting to go bad. I was just wondering how long the synchros usually last in these cars and how expensive it is to fix them. I've owned a couple of Supras in the past so i'm familiar with Toyotas. I'm also pretty hands on guy so i guess that i'll need to know whether this will be a DIY job or not as well. Thanks.

Only way to know for sure is test drive. I have a 91 that had notchy shifts, but new shifter bushings and gear oil change fixed it for the most part, and did so inexpensively. If the price is right, you could source a 93+ tranny with dual synchros, which are much better than the 91 single synchros.

Synchromesh. Do a search on here and on MR2OC and you will find your answer.

Simply put, go to Autozone and buy four quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh. Drain your tranny and refill with the Synchromesh. You will be amazed, but it will likely take a hundred miles ore more.

Yes, it's an N/A. It IS a 3.0 liter V6 though. Does that matter?
