i test drove a 97 model today non turbo, 80 000km engine looked very neat , interior as well , the only problem is that 1 and 2nd gear was not very fast , dident feel that power delivery when u slam the gas, the car felt like it had 90Kw
The revs were smooth engine noise clean and smooth , just the power delivery to the wheels was 'nt that fast
what could cause such a los of power?
i think new clutch needed... what do you think ???
non turbos aren't all that fast in the first place...maybe that was just normal...if it were the clutch going...you would be slipping in gears (ie. revs going up but car not moving)....
arnt stockN/A mr2 like 130kw or something , maybe the clutch is about to go , i understand clutch slipping (revs going up but not much movment of car)
i just think 130 kw should feel faster. i dont know i beter test drive another one to compare
is there a much diferance between 90n/a and a 97 n/a in terms of engine?
in australia the N/A are 2.0L the engine is SW20R
I just sold my R1 2001 as i wanted a car, the r1 used to fly but thats to thr weight power ratio wich was out of this world..
I still think its clutch slipping , as even my father who is a mechanic and dosent drive fast , felt the mr2 to be slugish, my best bet is to test drive another mr2 with the same engine type to sure.
Anyway i hope i get the yellow mr2 as the 97 model is realy something clean.
If i wanted power i get a turbo mr2, but then i dont want power any more , just a pure sports car which the mr2 is .
engine number should be stamped on the car plate in the front boot.
My 3S-GE isn't the most powerful car I've owned. Infact, it's probably the weakest. But it's got enough poke to maintain cornering speeds, which is what it's all about.

yes engine number is stamped on the plate, but u have to match that with the actual engine , i just need to know where can i find the number on the engine ?
what model do you own ??
i am picking up my 97 toyota mr2 non turbo 2 morrow, what should i look out for???
any suggestions?
and also where is the engine number ingraved on the engine??
I could've gotten an import turbo for that money, but for the condition of the car and also the fact that it's got full service history, I'd be mad to pass it up. I thought the log books were bogus but I called the dealer and they confirmed it. It's just racked up 190,000kms and it' still going strong.
I use to own an import Skyline GTR and the headaches associated with finding parts and people knowing how to fix it, it's not worth it. I'm so over the whole turbo thing. I do a lot of track work and keeping turbo engines cool are a nightmare.
Plans for this car are simple. Everything stock, but suspension/brakes are free game. Even exhaust is stock! lol
Look out for the targa top leaking, and also first/second/third gear changes. Some I tested were a little reluctant to change 1/2/3 gears quickly and swiftly.

I picked it up yesterday, what a car it is, its so clean only 80 000km sounds etc..
i has no power steering due for being a bathurst model, very sensitive to bumps, over 120km/h steering has a vibration is it beacuse of the stiff suspension which throws feedback from the road to the driver??
It can't be steering aligment as i let go of the wheel and it dosn't sverve.
Anyway comparing the mr2 to other cars like supra skyline, the mr2 is a very sporty classy car i love the interior.
WHat petrol do you use Silver?? i use premium unleaded, could mine run ok just on unleaded...?
Silver do you own a repair manual for your mr2?? if so where u picke dit up from and hw much u pay??
Mine gearbox is smooth very quick shifts -- i could just imagine if it was turbo ..
Try getting the front wheels balanced first. Cheapest option first than changing suspension components. See how it goes.
Surprisingly the MR2 has a much stiffer chassis than my old 94 WRX. It handles much better than the WRX also. Only thing it lacks is grip but you really can't beat 4WD at the end of the day.
I run all 3 but my first preference is BP ultimate, Mobil Synergy 8000 then Shell Optimax. From previous tests at race tracks I find that BP doesn't ping as much as the others.
Also, one of the guys on the Skylines Australia forum actually conducted lab tests on fuels and found that all 3 had similar octane ratings and all 98 octane as advertised. However they found that optimax had a higher levels of benzene(sp???) and that over a period of time Optimax would break down, thus reducing it's octane rating. Something to do with the refinery process.
I do own the service manual for my MR2, but it's on file and the previous owner gave me the CD. I haven't checked it out yet but it's for 91 model so it's similar to the 92 model.

Well 2day I had fun driving it to uni with no t tops, came home and changed the oil and oil filter, air filter also. Next I do spark etc. 2 morrow I get wheel alignment c what happens. Slivers have you got power steering? And is it turbo? I thought its N/A
If not doesn’t have power steering does yours vibrate at all at high speed?? IS it very smooth?
2day I noticed how sensitive the steering actually is very precise. And I could feel how glued the car is to the road on corners, all the reviews I read come true once in practice.
I don't have power steering and a turbocharger. My steering has no issues vibrating at high speeds either. But like I said, hopefully you just need a wheel balance. Worst case scenario's - buckled rim, worn bushes, just hope it's not them!
