I was just wondering what are the best parts for a turbo Mr2 horsepower wise. I am building an mr2 and i want a lot of horsepower out of it. I want to rebuild my block and head and upgrade my turbo system with a faster bigger turbo. Any help in this category will be much appreciated
Thanks for your help guys your replys help a lot if you guys have any other info let me know. as for the money in the bank post im putting 10 G into the motor and suspension hows that sound??
You should prolly just grab a Jspec Engine and Tranny if you dont already have it. Also a friend of mine sent his ECU to a place somewhere in U.S. ( I can find out if you want to use it). And for $1000 american they remap your ECU and provide u with a bigger turbo.
Now mind you a 91 MR2 turbo w/ a JSpec engine and tranny running 15PSI of boost will beat a VIPER first 3 and a half gears. Friend of mine did it on the track repeatedly. Just doing this to tell you that you wont need tons of HP in MR2 they're already very fast cars as is, and great every day drives.
I think Jspec Engines are a good investment, they're alredy have higher HP then North American ones, so its a good start.
If you're going to rebuild the motor and upgrade the turbo, there's really no point in spending your money on a JDM motor. The JDM motor only puts out more HP becuase of emissions control here, it has a ct20b, and slight differences in tuning!
The motor and Tranny are exactly the same, and if you have a '93, you most likely already have LSD. The only major difference I see between the two, is the ct26 vs ct20b turbo. But, if you're gonna go big with the turbo anyways, that kinda eliminates that point!
All in all, with the power numbers you're looking for, USDM or JDM makes no difference. To make that much power from the 3sgte, you're looking at some serious modifications, that will absolutely require hours upon hours of tuning, and a whole butt load of patience.
I don't know if 10 grand will get you those numbers, but it sure is a good wad of dough to start with!
GOOD LUCK!

That is all in all a BAD idea. He wasn't between 400-500whp. A stock ECU isn't going to do that for him. And like 4DMR2T said.... there is no HUGE difference between JDM and USDM. I have a JDM engine and tranny running 18psi.... and I'm not on a stock turbo, exhaust, intake.... and I'm using water injection.... there is no way in hell I would hang with a Viper.
I'm not lying to you guys, not trying to pump up MR2 or whatever, but I saw it with my own eyes. The only thing that this guy has is upgraded suspension, Magnaflow exaust, JSpec Engine + Tranny, running at 20-25lbs of PSI, on 255 17s on rear and 215s on front.
He never lost ar ace to anyone but that Viper, and he had him till about midway threw 3rd gear and then the Viper started taking off, and there was no catchin him.
I was just suggesting ideas, all of you guys probably know a lot more about MR2 perfomance then I do, i was just suggesting what I saw already a friend do. If you think this is a bad idea then simply dont do it, I would rather listen to rest of these guys then me, cause as I said, they probably know a lot more then I do.
But I also said he went threw 2 engines that summer when he was running 20-25lbs of boost, on a stock Turbo ECU. He changed it this spring to Blitz ECU that runs around 15lbs of PSI safely without blowing head gaskets and cracking pistons. Car is consdierably slower and probably couldnt' hang with the Viper now ( so sorry for the mix up, 25lbs of boost beat the Viper not 15lbs, and only first 3 gears). Thing is u gotta understand, taht Viper probably couldn't hook up right off the start, so thats why he had him at the start. When he actually hooked up, he pulled away from my buddy and there was no catching him.
So pls dont mind me, listen to those other guys, they'll tell u how to do your MR2 up safely and realibly.
BTW if you wanted the number of that place its (416) 744-1517. Place is called BIG Japanese Auto Parts.
Actually he never ran a track time, but we have another friend that drives the latest WRX STI, and he ran 12.4 on the track, when he raced him numerous times my MR2 buddy beats him by at least 1 and a half car length off the start. So probably around low 12s.
But again pls understand this is a very cheap and unreliable way of doing up your car, he just upped the boost to 20-25lbs, at one time he had his waste gate open fully, so when he would slam on it he would be running 30lbs of boost. As I said that summer he went threw 2 engines. 1 had cracked piston, other one had blown head gasket.
