Fronts won't be too bad, but rears will look tucked!

with a 40 offset?

17x8 +40 up front will be about 5mm from flush with the fender. (Lookin pretty good), but you'll only be about 2-3mm away from the suspension on the inside, so be weary of what size tire you put on there.

17x8 +40 in rear will still be about 10mm from the fender, so it will still look a little tucked, but not as bad as the 17x7.

Ideally, you want a staggered set-up, with a little bit wider in the rear, but if you must go with 4 rims of the same size, I'd go with the 17x8's.

With those, you can stick a 5-10mm spacer in the rear, and you'll be lookin pretty good all around, and with the right tire sizes, you probably won't have to roll the fenders.

Hope I could help. GOOD LUCK!
Frank

*EDIT* actually, 17x8 with 35 offset would look pretty good all around! if you can find that offest.

I'm running 17x7 w/+42 off set all around, but- 205/40 ff and 215/40 rr with a 1.25" spacer. both front and rear come to very edge of fender wells. rubs a little once in a while in the front when i hit a bump or something. I would think 8" in ff would rub alot.. just my .02

hmmm this has been really helpful.....but i have a few more questions to bother you guys with.
the rims i was looking at was 17x 8 +35mm

1. if i get that all around w/ a border kit what would i have to do to the front and back to make it both look flush?

2. if yes, would spacers do the job?

3. and if all the above is a yes, would it damage my strusts or suspension

sorry guys...im really clueless on this stuff

OK, first off. Pertaining to MR2BAD's comments.

You said you run a 17x7 +42 all around, and use a 1.25 inch spacer in the rear. That's 32mm to make it close to flush! That should give you an idea of how tucked that wheel would be without the spacer.

In the front, you said you experience some rubbing on hard bumps. I can't imagine what is rubbing. With a 7" wide rim and a +42 offset, you can't even be close to the fender. The only thing I can think of, is maybe you have some negative camber, and you're rubbing the suspension.

I have 17x8 +40 up front with no rubbing problems at all!

OK, now let's pretend you wanted the wheels to be as close to flush as possible, with a staggered setup (what MR2's are supposed to have)

Ideal setup for an MR2 with 17 inch rims would be

F 17x8 +35
R 17x9 +35

Remember, this will require rolling of the rear fenders, so there's no rubbing on the fender lip.

Here's my setup:

F 17x8 +40 215/40
R 17x9 +35 245/40

As you can see, the rears are flush, and the fronts could afford to come out another 5mm. With the +40 offset up front, it also only leaves about 2-3mm of space between the wheel and the strut housing. Just enough to avoid any rubbing issues.

Now, you said you'll be getting a border kit and want to stay with 17x8 +35 all around. Since the border side skirt are pretty wide, you'll want to get as close to the fenders as you can.

The fronts will be perfect with a 215/40 tire

The rears will be slightly tucked. A 5mm spacer should allow you to stick a 235/40 on there with no problems at all. A 245/40 or maybe even 255/40 will also fit on the with no rubbing, but you might have to roll the fenders a little.

A 10mm spacer would put you perfectly flush with the fender, but rolling will definately be needed to get any tire on there, and a 255/40 will require almost completely removing the fender lip. A 245/40 will fit pretty well with good fender rolling.

So, in conclusion, here's what I'd do, if I were in your situation. Remember, this is only my opinion, you can do whatever you want. It's your car.

F 17x8 +35 w/ 215/40 tire
R 17x8 +35 w/ 10mm spacer and 245/40 tire and roll the hell out of those rear fenders!

With that setup, you'll be looking hot to trot, with plenty of suspension clearance!

If you actually read this far, GOOD LUCK!
Frank

Frank

as u can see it is very close to edge of fender in the front. It rubs the plastic molding inside the well. I found some obvious rub marks on them. though this rarely happens, it's usually over a bump and in a turn-going under 15mph. I'm using KYB 4 way adjustables set on # 2. I may go to the #3 setting and see if that stops it. but i'm pretty comfortable with the 2 setting. but like I said, it rarely happens..as far as spacers, i don't really care to be using them, but like u said they were tucked in more than i cared for. but I'm too cheap to fork out the $$$ for wider rims. But i may still end up getting some anyway.

MR2BAD, I don't know. To me, that front looks very tucked. That could easily come out about another 15mm.

That might be why you're rubbing the plastic splash gaurd. Are you rubbing on the inside or near the fender? If it's the inside, I bet it's when you have the wheel turned a little bit.

I don't know about "very tucked". when i stand straight above it. i can see the side wall of the tire.yea, it could come out a little more, but i'm just not willing to put the money into that right now.I'm concentrating on the engine and HP. as far as the rubbing, i know it's the plastic splash guard cuz there are scrape marks on it and it came loose once. one of these days I will get off my cheap ass and get wider rims like i really want.something similar to yours. But I do appreciate your opinion ...

18's will work with the same width and offsets. Just remember, you'll need to go 35 series on the tires to get them to fit. At least the front anyways. The rear might still fit a 40.

I have also heard of some people complaining of rubbing in the front with the 18" wheels. But others have no problems at all. Could have something to do with camber as well.

If you want to go 18's you might want to consider 18's in the rear and 17's in the front. A lot of MR2 owners go this route with great success.
