Question skybandit

Ok,this question is gonna expose me as a complete mechanical noob but I gotta ask.....while driving my belt somehow came off my alternator.I made it home on battery juice with no problem.I put a new belt on that i was going to put on anyway(funny how that happens) but i would like to know what is the official name of the round thingy that the alternator belt wraps around on the engine??Is it the crankshaft pulley, harmonic balancer or underdrive pulley?Whatever it is I would like to get a new one so another question would be where does one get it,what brand is best and the 20 question is replacing the old one with a new one as simple as unscrewing or unbolting the old one and put in the new one??Thanks all,Pete.

well.... in my eyes you called it by every name that it could be know as... and they are all right.... I guess? I just call it the crankshaft pulley - simply because it is attached to the crankshaft.... and is a pulley!
and to answer your other question about removal\installation..... YES: it is just a simple proceedure. I think it's a 19mm.. could be wrong. but you unbolt it, fight with it a few minutes until it flies off and smacks you in the face... then install the new on in reverse order-- you bolt it on. then reinstall your alt. belt, ac belt.... and so on..

but why do you want a new pulley? is it chipped or something? or are you getting a lightweight pulley?

Cool skybandit

Hey,thanks for your help and it is chipped a little, how did you know...??Is that normal for these cars?I got it inspected yesterday and passed with flying colors and the mechanic said it wasn't too bad,but just to be safe I'm gonna get a new one.How much are these suckers and where is a good place to get a lightweight one like you mentioned??Again, thanks for your help,Pete.

I think the fact that you used your nickname as the title of the thread might expose you as a complete noob.. next time try using whatever question you're going to ask as the title of the thread. Something like "Belt Problems" or "Belt questions" would be a good choice as opposed to "skybandit".

any parts-house should be able to get them for you... autozone...advanced... you know. I'm not sure about the price... I wish you had posted sooner... I just threw my spare stuff to the junk yard.. figured I didn't need it. all I was looking for was the block.
