The widest street tire you can get on there with very little issues is a 235.
That is what I run on the back of both of Jekyl and Hyde on the street.
A 17X7 with a 235.
NoShoes Moore actually squeezed a 245 onto the same rim, but I do not recommend that.
I have run a 255 drag radial on a 16X7, but DRs are designed entirely different.
J&H.... you said with "very little issues".... please explain. I just don't want to hit a bump and pop the seal around the wheel! I think I'm gonna go with the 235\50\17 brigdestone potenza's.. for the rear of course. and stick with my 205's up front.
As indicated in my post, you will have very little issue .. if you went bigger, I would be more concerned. As for the seal popping, I set the Weatherly Hill Climb record last year on a 235 Falcon street tire. I wouldn't expect you to ever put a tire under that kind of pressure ... and if you a hit bump bad enough, it's not going to matter wwhat size tire is on there.
I'm getting new tires soon ( bought the car with 17x7 front and back ), 215's all four atm. They rub up front and wanted to know what tire size you'd recommend for the front to eliminate ( or reduce ) that problem.
That's your problem! ... your tire is way too tall.
A typical 16" for a MKII up front is: 215/45/16.
A 215/45/16 = 599.9 tall.
Let's talk 17s. If you have a taller rim, you need a SMALLER sidewall.
If you run a 215/40/17 = 603.8 tall (it is a little taller than stock)
If you run a 215/35/17 = 582.3 tall (it is a little shorter than stock)
You 215/45/17s = 625.3 tall! No wonder they are rubbing!
