Hi there! I recently accquired a 1985 MR2. She has good miles (130K), and I am planning on givng her some TLC. I have never changed spark plugs on a Toyota (former Honda owner...sorry), so bear with me here, I feel stupid. When I pulled the boot off, there is a bunch of oil in the chamber there. It seems like if I remove a plug, oil will run into the holes. ????? Please help me out...it would be much appreciated. I dont want to screw anything up.
if you ask me, just clean the spark plug holes with a good throttle body or carbuer-traitor spray before installing the new plugs, but def change the valve cover gasket and stuff.
Thought a little more about your response. When i added oil that morning (before checking plugs) I spilled some in that valley. I bet it slippeI through the seals on the plug wire boot. I am feeling sheepish. I will double check in morning. LOL at myself.
Well, that's not where it came from. Upon closer inspection, it appears as if the valve cover gasket(s) are leaking from the inside...does that make sense? There is like...a LOT of oil in there. I am pretty sure if I replace those gaskets I will solve the problem. Is there a breather or other way that oil could spill in there? Well, no matter, once I get it apart I will be able to pinpoint it. Wish me luck. I am replacing the exhaust manifold gasket tomorrow. Amyone have experiance with that? Looks easy, but this is my first Toyota, and my first center mounted RWD, so time will tell. Thanks again PEACE out! -Daniella
well, yeah, they need to be replaced...when they are leaking into the spark plug valley, you need to change them. you'll want to replace the little donuts on the cover bolts. Fel-Pro gaskets are ok and get the donuts from Toyota. use some Toyota Seal PAcking (FIPG) on the corners on the the sides of the cams. also! buy a BGB (aka Toyota factory service manual) and it'll help you immensely! good luck!
Cool...I changed out the gaskets (Fel-Pro $13.99) the other day. I actually hadn't read your post yet, didn't use any sealant in the corners. Took her out a bit (pushed her a wee bit harder than normal), no signs of leaking yet. I did notice that those grommets probably needed replacing, will take care of those next week. This weekend I am tackling that exhaust gasket, coolant looks OK (thank god...I have done a drain and fill on an MR2 before and it is a PITA), but will probably change the fuel filter and give her underside a good inspection while she is in the air. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! I am mechanically inclined, but like to double check myself. Its always nice to get advice from someone a little more versed on the specific model.
no problem. do make sure to change those gaskets (doughnuts) and make sure to torque them properly. off the top of my head, they are 9lb/ft. ah! the exhaust gasket is fun. make sure to use NEW Toyota exhaust nuts. i also use a dab of anti-seize in them. other than that, have fun! it's what it's all about, isn't it?!?!
one thing about getting underneath...bring a torque wrench and have your torque values ready. that's why i suggested a BGB. if nothing else, alt least bring your wrenches 14, 17, 19 and a few sockets of the same size and a 22mm socket and just make sure everything is tight. bring a rag also so you can inspect/wipe off any oil or grease in order to find the source of a leak or what-not.
yeah, your MkI will require 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19 on a regular basis. 22, and 32 are some you will encounter with bigger jobs.
you'll want #2 phillips bits/screwdrivers for the interior and most phillips heads on the car. occassionally you'll need a #1 phillips.
