Newb here

Hi guys, just bought a 91 mr2 n/a (yes yes I know n/a is the gay, but I got a real good deal on it) anywho it only has 93k miles and was lady driven since, no accidents and the blue paint is still superb..

So im coming from a honuh civic and ahve a couple q's. What are some popular DIY's 2nd gen owners do to their cars? Whats my best best to get some added ponies from her ie. headers intake exhuast? or is there another route to go... Oh and do those intake scoops really work I dont like the side mounted ones but the one that mounts on your roof aint to bad... anywho gonna go sit in my new toy cya!

Okay, you could search this forum for power adders for the NA and possible turbo swaps (what you need if you plan on making decent power)... both have been well documented on this site, just search for em.

if you put an intake on your NA ill sound just beastly (a good thing), as far as power, the NAs have headers, intakes, and exhausts... but not much else

i had my NA going pretty quick because i tore out everything i could get my hands on, but now im getting a jap turbo swap (cant wait)

and as far as the scoops go, the ones on the sides are more functional than the aftermarket ones you see all over... at speed air goes into your engine bay via side vents and from under the car and it exits through the top vents. to have something pushing air in the opposite direction of air flow will cause disturbances in the air and decrease/negate any cooling effect most people think they are getting. to sum it up: they are for looks

try www.importperformanceparts.net they have a good selection.
If you want body mods... go to www.mr-2.com\english for some bad-ass mr2's <---- they have examples of virtually EVERY external mod done to an mr2.
as for your new toy... if you keep it in good health it should last a LONG time. I got mine with 134K on the clock.. I just passed 205K still running strong.

The general consensus here is that you can spend a lot of money to get a little bit of power out of the 5SFE ( the N/A engine ), or spend about $2500 + Labor and get the 3SGTE ( Turbo Engine ) full clip. N/A isn't gay, still a beautiful mid-engine car. =)

MR-355-5sfTe is trying the fabled turbo charging the N/A engine ( and I'd love to see it run when done ), but he could tell you that its been a long headache and horrible time consumer.

Someone can probably post a link, I forget the name of the site. But it specializes in selling used 3SGTE clips. Its where Drifting Dane got his, I think.

Also once you have the 3SGTE there's a lot more options for speed/power.

drifting dane is getting his from http://www.paautoracing.com/mr2/. i had my swap installed back in february and its running great. its like $2500 for the clip. $1200 (now) for the labor. also set aside another $500-1k to fix minor things on the clip. for parts i recommend http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/ they have a bunch of stuff and decent prices. do the swap. the difference is unreal.

Has anyone heard about the supercharger that came out a while ago. I think it was from Rippmods or something. I was thinking of going that route to be a little different and was wondering pro's & cons.

Welcome to the dark side! These baby's are hella fun.

I believe it is Ripmods...a little more limited to the boost with present superchargers, but not a bad way to go..mounting it may be a problem.Either driving it directly from the crank pulley or running a shaft to S/C pulley. I haven't seen the set up myself. but they're out there...I think Ishcolebo may have a hook up for that..

The Rippmodds S/C is pretty pricey for what you get. You could do a custom 5sfte setup for MUCH cheaper. I don't think ANY MR2 person has bought one yet.... every time rippmodds posts on MR2OC they get torn apart by anybody with 1/2 of a brain. Yukio (CamryPunk) has the Rippmodds supercharger on his Camry.... so you might want to see how he likes it. Some pics of his car/engine at http://team13devils.com if I remember correctly. I think the price tag on those things is close to $3,000. You could get a JDM 3rd Gen 3sgte for that..... with a new stronger tranny, lsd.... etc.

So is it 'taboo' for n/a owners to do home made turbo setups? Or just not as pracitcal as just going the swap route + factory turbo upgrade
