2nd Generation Clutch??? Synchros??? All I hear is grind

Car: SW21 1991
Symptoms: When I shift from 2nd to 1st the shift knob becomes more difficult to pop into 1st and there is grind(downshift). When it grinds it is never in gear or it is just about to be. What is wrong?? My clutch is starting to slip however the grinding dosent happend when I shift up or in anyother gear transition than 2nd to 1st. It sounds like a high pitched grind... or very similar to someone zipping a large zipper. When i first heard it I looked similar to this ==> you know without the yellow and I have a nose and ears. When I hear it I put it back into neutral and clutch one or two more times. PLEASE LET ME HEAR YOUR OPINION AND ADVICE!!!

Hey
I had the same problem. What is happening is when you down shift your clutch is not working properly and the transmission is not sychronizing itself to let you go to first. This is why a lot of people mistake it for the sychros. Replace your clutch and it will be fine .......mine was. Make sure what you have said is correct. If you can shift up quickly with no grinding your sychro is ok. If you here a grind then you should be looking like this because you need to have your sychro replaced.

you down shift from 2nd to 1st? I hope ur goin' dead slow when you do that...if your clutch is slipping , it's time for a new one. get your flywheel turned too and replace the flywheel bolts. they tend to stretch. and use loktite on them

if it is your synchro's, make sure you replace them. It will be a lot cheaper down the road. Trust me.

Completely agree but it would b better if u change the synchros also just to b on the safe side.It looks like your clutch is fine.

I'm having this problem myself and I dont think it could be my clutch since my clutch is brand new, only my problem is when I go from 1st to 2nd. I can force it into gear but the grind I feel worrys me. Reveres also grinds a little but and the dose seem to be a very small amount of free play in the clutch pedal. Any ideas? (this is my first manual transmission so I dont now how to work on it yet, but I have only had it a week and didnt think I would have needed to work on it so soon).

you guys may be able to relieve most of that by changing your gear oil and replacing it with Redline gear oil...

The fluids that are in it are only a week old though.

Sounds like a bad synchro to me.
I dont see how a clutch problem would cause only one gear to grind.

Do you know how to do a clutchless shift?
This is a surefire way to tell if you have a bad synchro.
If one gear feels different from all the rest when doing it, chances are it's a bad synchro.

yeah, but it's not Redline...that particular brand will help in the short run. But I have to agree with SpeedballTrix-synchro...it'll be expensive to fix...
