not me damnit.. the car. I was on my way to work this afternoon, and about half-way there.. the car decides to take a crap. I noticed a loud backfire (afterburn) and then alot of studdering... mostly when under decent acceleration... ie. from a dead stop, or climbing a hill. so I decided to turn around and head home... but I figured.. hell, I'm almost to an auto-zone.. might as well pick up some stuff. I BARELY make it to the store.. . I've known my ignition wires were ready for replacement... so I bought new wires and plugs... changed them in the parking lot. fired it up when I was done, and it helped tremendously. I still notice a little bobble when I'm sitting at a trafic light.. any ideas? other than to go ahead and change the rotor and cap?
cap and rotor may do it.. what did the plugs look like? fowled or anything? and when the last time u changed your fuel filter? maybe u should quit chugging so much beer
I figured it was ignition related.. either that or some bad petrol. the plugs were...well.. white-ish... and isn't that a sign of running lean? I knew the wires were crapped out.. and I noticed one of those little phillips head screws that hold the dist. cap on is GONE. so it wobbles a bit. <-- not good.
and I'm not much for beer... bacardi maybe, but no beer.
eh, u can chug Bacardi too. I know I used too plugs sound OK..but u really need to get another screw for the cap(I know u know that). that could make a difference as fast as that critter spins...what about fuel filter? if dirty could cause intermittent bogging as sediment is churned and tossed around interupting fuel flow..but like u, my first appraoch would be to the ign. sys.
I stopped by the same auto-zone where I changed the plugs and wires... and ordered the fuel filter.. $19.99.. that's the most expensive fule filter I've ever seen! but I ordered it anyway. I also added some "Lucas fuel treatment" hoping that It might have been bad gas. I filled the tank only half-way and drove the mother home like I stole it in front of fifty cops. it ran great the entire way... but as soon as I hit a stop sign....(yeah I stopped) it bobbled pretty bad. so I'm gonna try and find a bolt to fit the distr. cap... and then see what happens.
remember my bolt that flew out of my brakes? well the one I replaced it with is GONE TOO!! ??? what the hell?
yea, I remember that... whats goin' on? bolt and/or hole thread must be worn. either use loktite or tap new thread in hole...
maybe adjust idle and check timing too...
I can't tap a new thread.. if I did, the bolt I would have to use to fit the new threads wouldn't fit through the brake caliper.. the brake caliper flew upwards on the interstate... grinding on my milano wheels! and I had no stoping ability. (more worried about the wheels) the brake piston was the only thing clamping down on the rotor!!! the brake pads jumped ship when the caliper flew up. so luckily I had some more pads at the house.
as for the timing\idle thing...eh... I'll figure it out sometime. most likely sunday ... too tired tonight.
I've added a screw to the distr. cap... it didn't help, it still studders just a bit immediately once I hit the gas... I'll have to try the fuel filter next..
anyone else have an idea?
I've adjusted my idle... still shudders at low rpms (immediately once I hit the throttle) how could my timing be off if I never messed with it? my t-belt had been replaced about 10K ago... timing was set then, would I need to mess with my afm?
I just suggested checking it to rule it out and be sure in your search for the problem It's prolly OK, but unless u check it, it's only an assumption..as far as AFM, I don't reccomend messing with it. the workings are delicate. not sure what u could do with it anyway. except replace it. u may have to take it to a tech and run a sytems diagnostic.
but would the afm cause my hesitation?? it only does it when I'm at really low rpms... like around 1200.... after that, she runs like a champ. I cleaned my k&n filter.. just to see if that did anything.........but it didn't. I'm sure it helped.. but not my current problem. I have a new distributor (less than 8k on it)... so I guess all that's left is the fuel filter. does anyone know if the filter from a camry's 5sfe will fit?
don't get frustrated... you'll find the problem-eventually. when I get stuck and can't fugure it out, I just take my baby to my freind mechanic...it's gotta be fuel or ingnition.maybe even a vacuum leak...
you know... when I put the fuel treatment in ...I got petrol from the same station as I did before this happened....... it's possible I got even more bad petrol. I'll fill up at a different, more respectable station on the way home tonight. and we'll see if that helps.
