how strong is a 3sge? can i reach 200hp

Questions about the 3 gen 3sge.

I own a 97 model mr2 with a 3sge . it might be even a 3.5 gen as I read somewhere they started from 96 up.

Those engines are rated to have 170hp.. Is that at the wheels??

I cannot make up my mind what to do to it so I hope your expertise can help me in my decision, as I have 2 options for this engine to achieve 200hp or over. Keep in mind I don’t want to change any internals.

  • Turbo charge it. Would the internals manage a turbo??if yes how much psi would it take. Is the block as tough as the 3sgte block??
  • If turbo charging is a bad idea due to weak block, cams, would a reprogrammed ecu , intake, and exhaust get me there?
P.S I don’t want to do a 3sgte swap .

this is the engine all i got is intake

Thanks

Oooooh kay....

first off, the 3sge and the 3sgte have the same block. second, that 170 hp is base horse power (bhp) and is measured at your flywheel, so that is not to your wheels. you can put a turbo on almost anything... yes your internals can handle boost, but i wouldnt push it to any extreme.

It'd be a stretch to get 200 whp out of your 3sge with an intake and exhaust and ecu.

I'd just do a 3SGTE swap over. You can play around with cams/exhaust/pp head/etc... but it's a lot of work and effort.

Turbo the current motor is a lot of work too, but then you can only run low boost due to high compression and low flowing injectors.

You can pick up a 3SGTE rear cut for cheap and it's got all the parts you need to get it running. Check out Jap performance or Ichiban in Moorebank.
