CRAP!! I broke three ball joint removal tools trying to remove one (count'em.. 1, uno, singular)
front ball joint... the mother just wouldn't budge!! I soaked it in penetrating lube.... still standing strong!! I gave it a few "taps" with a micro adjustment tool (hammer).. .. that didn't help any either??!?
anyone else tried to replace them yourself?
I'd go ahead and say it's a do-it-yourself type thing.. but geeze... mine won't budge...
the style I was using was "designed" sort of like a pulley removal tool...
it has two L-shaped "legs" that are hinged and are supposed to hold on to the lower control are, while the main bolt of the tool is tightened to push the ball joint loose from the control arm...
I've bent two, and broken one.
I havn't used the fork style simply cause my service manual call for the other design.

Those suck, get the badass fork type and a big hammer.
The Bashing isn't where you would expect. Bash the casting around the ball joint stud. I mean hit it like you mean it. It won't break.
Tighten your ball joint puller a little. Bash some more, tighten a little, bash some more. hey wow, I can tighten the puller again, bash some more. POP! it'll come out.
my car is the DEVIL!!!! It broke the forked ball joint removal tool this afternoon!!!!
I'm taking everyone's advice in... beating the crap out of this thing to remove the part..... spray it with penetrating lube.... wail on it some more... and ""cling"".... the aluminum fork just snapped! broke one side of the fork off!!??? so.... maybe my ball joints ARE good.... but not after what I've put them through!!!
I'm gonna go buy another one... and see if I can feed more tools to my car.
Note, there are TWO sizes of pickle fork tools: one is typically used on tierod ends, the other on American-car-sized balljoints. The large tool is the one you need to span the tapered stud of the balljoint. My guess is, the small one you used was too narrow, which is why it broke off. Some large tools, however, may be too large for the task - they do vary a bit.
I have done a LOT of MR2 balljoints with a pickle fork. Turn the steering all the way to the side you are removing and insert the fork from the front of the car near the fender. (You may want to protect the fender with cardboard or something.) Slowly tap the tool into the joint until it stops solidlly, then whack the tool pretty hard with a 3-to-5 lb. hammer.
I have yet to have one withstand this method.
