Newbie-Coolant Leak

I just bought a 91 MR2 Turbo. I noticed the smell of coolant and after closer investigation I could see coolant driping on the exhaust. I am trying to trace the source but I seems very difficult since there looks like coolant on the backside (bumper side) of the engine which may have been sprayed there. It also looked like coolant dripping from the turbo (front side). However, I think there are only oil lines going to the turbo. Please help!

Unhappy Coolant leak

Yo ttreat,I hope I can help you a bit,I have a 91 N/A that was leaking coolant also, check the hard pipes that go from front to back.Mine had dry rotted a bit which caused the coolant leak.So I had to replace them which was quite a pain in the neck. The heater core tubes were also shot as was the fuel filler neck, that required dropping the whole dang fuel tank and was not something I want to do.I hope this helps a bit,Pete.

Looing at the online tech bulletin it looks like there is a "water" pipe. Since it only looks like one pipe I am very curious what this pipe does. The leak looks like it is coming from the turbo. It looks like there is a seam in the center of the turbo and coolant is leaking from that seam. As with many leaks they seam to appear where in places other than the actual location. Any thoughts, Pleas help!!!

Question Coolant leak

Hmm,could be your turbo that is leaking,is it the stock turbo??How many miles u got on it??I believe the heater tubes were under the gas tank,i couldnt do that so i took it to the "stealership" to get fixed, real pricey by the way...

I stripped off the air tube, skid guards, intake connection, heat shield and more to get a better look. It doesn't look like there are any leaks around the turbo pipe connections. What I thought was a water leak was actually some oil. The pipes under the car look great and don't appear to have any leaks.

I suspect there is a leak because there is a hint of coolant smell when I get out of the car. There is also residue on the exhaust pipe near the flex connection that is from coolant. I drove the car from Florida to Pennsylvania with no overheating so I don't think it is too serious but I would like to find the problem.

if you're finding evidence of a leak on your B-pipe, it may be one of the by pass hoses(hose from hell) under the exhaust manifold. cheap fix, just hard to get to..
