Unhappy Starting issues

Howdy,I think this should be an easy one for everyone. My 91 N/A is not starting. It will start after a jump and run fine, the voltmeter after the jump goes almost to the top but when starting its at halfway and all i hear is a clicking, whirling noise. The battery is only about 2 months old so I dont think thats the issue. Is it the starter or alternator and is there a way i can check or test to see if its one or the other? Thanks,Pete.

Pep boys, advance auot parts, etc. can/will check for free...starter would be first guess, but that is just a guess. i usually start at the battery, making sure cables are clean and secure and work my way from there...

If it starts when it's jumped then it's obviously not the starter, unless the engine will not crank having verified that your lights work fine (For example, to confirm that there is power). If the battery is new check the cluster for the CHARGE warning light and have your alternator checked at a auto parts store, specially if warning light is lit. It is unusual for the voltemeter to reach max voltage when jumped. It should be 3/4 (Or a tad less) the way up when key is in ON position
