Accessory Belt

I was driving and I heard a pop pop pop comming from behind me. a belt was a frayed and flapping belt that goes to the I beleieve A.C. Compressor. Does that belt go to anything mechanically important? I tried to look in the engine but its impossible to see and I looked at the diagrams ( GREAT MANULE http://carfiche.com/mans/ ) and couldent tell if it went anywhere besides the main pully out of the engine.

Anyone replaced the AC belt? Is there an easy way?
Can I just cut the belt and run it without it? (A.C. dosent work needs charging) would it cause excessive strain on the bearings because it is only going to the alternator?

anyone with a belt diagram I would appreciate a link or email (datailwind@hotmail.com)

Smile belt

Hey,I have a 91 N/A that does not have the belt, the car runs fine without it.The alternator belt is the important one, without it your car will not start at all.I was driving also when i heard a pop and the sound of the belt comin off,it was the alternator belt that had snapped and i barely made it home.If you want to put a A/C belt on,it doesn't seem to be so hard just loosen the idle adjustment pulley, its the one with the little pully on it,adjust it low enough until the belt comes off, take the old one off,put the new one on,tighten that puppy up and test it out.The bolt that you have to loosen is the bolt on top of the idle adj pulley,if your looking down at the engine, its pointing straight at the ground, good luck.
