Angry spun bearing

my car's making some odd noises... vibrating alot more.... and lost some power.

tonight on the interstate I noticed the car was making a noise like when you drive over those warning strips on the side of the road... you know... the "brrrrrrr" noise. well... NO, I wasn't on those strips! I noticed it alot at around 2k rpm and a bit softer when accelerating from a stop.... it doesn't do it constantly, only at cirtain revs....
and also when I downshift it sounds like I've got a masive superchager... a nice "whirrring" sound is emmited... can't tell if it's the tranny going to hell, or a bearing... I threw it in nuetral... reved it a bit.... and it made a slight noise...

so I'm gonna change the oil in the morning and look for any flakes... if there's nothing in there, I'm gonna throw some redline in my tranny.

changed the oil this afternoon... didn't notice but a few specs of "something" in the oil.... but then again it could've been something off of my hands... I added some "pro-long" engine treatment to the mix...
took it up the road after it warmed up, and didn't hear the noise until I downshifted into first..... (auto tranny) I'd say the tranny has yet to be flushed, and is way past time for an oil change.... can anyone recommend a good transmission fluid... and\or treatment?

I Have had excellent luck with the Lucas oil treatment. Cured my t5 mustang tranny. It was noisy. Cured my montana tranny it was slipping and put it in my MR2 just because. Try it im sure you'll like it

Loss of power? Whirring noise at around 2k. Sounds to me like a rod!

How's your gas mileage? Worse than usual? Does it leak or burn oil? Are you ever running it with low oil? If you said yes to any of these, I'd definately say it's a rod, or a bearing.

Either way, it's not pretty. If that's the case, that motor is junk! It would probably be cheaper and easier to replace it. Not worth rebuilding it if it's a rod. The whole inside of your motor will be funked up!

I'm only speculating of course! But that's my guess. If that's the case, the motor is a time bomb now. No telling how long it will last. Could last a year, could last a day. But it will blow. Probably with a rod right through the block. I'm only saying these things, cuz it happened to me. Not a pretty sight. And you have all the same symptoms.

The only thing I could suggest to you, is change the oil and put crazy thick stuff in there. Like 50 weight, and some STP cleaner. You know, that really thick, goopy stuff. That might prolong the inevitable a little longer. Might even be strong enough to hold the bearings in the right place for a while, and stop the noise.

But either way, it's only gonna give you a little more time. Won't solve the problem. Hey, hopefully I'm wrong and it's something simple, but I'm just speaking from experience.

Best of luck to ya. Keep us informed!

yeah.... I made it to work today without any problems.. or noises that I'd heard before... I picked up my tranny fluid and some treatments, so I'll change that once I get home tonight around 12am... the auto tranny take dextron III correct? I can't remember exactly what the fsm called for, but I purchased the valvoline "max life" atf fluid... for transmissions over 75k... and some pro-long treatment...
hope it lasts until I can finish this 5sfte engine!

alright.... I changed the tranny fluid. put simply.... it stank. nice and black.... had a great fragrance to it.... smelled like a burnt clutch... after you do a ten minute burnoout without smoking the tires. so I changed that. just to clarify about the fluid... the valvoline "max life dexron III" can be used in place of the dexron II. I also added the prolong treatment in there....
I got to the mailbox and I heard what sounded like the same noise.... but this time I could've sworn it was the e-brake getting hung-up a bit.. it made a nice reverberation.... almost too harmonic for just pulling away from the mailbox under the power of idle.... and I've had problems with my ebrake before.... so I'm still worried either way.
as for fuel mileage decrease.... I havn't noticed any.. I still average around 30-35 mpg..... but I'm just gonna baby this thing until I can finish that engine...
I'll be sure to let you guys know if anythign else comes up.
thanks for the help

on the way to work... she was making more noises... seemed to happen aroun 2k again... and I still can't tell where it's coming from... so I'm just gonna take it easy from now on.
this all started the day I had larger tires put on the back... 235\45\17's ... they rub on the fender well whe I hit a bump... so I "modified" the fender wells to where it barely touches under full travel... could the noise possibly have someting to do with the way the tires were balanced? I'm just trying to think of anything possible at this point...
thanks again
