dumb wheel question

I know this is probably dumb but if an ad is listing a wheel as 5 x 4.5 is that really the same thing as 5/114.5? If the 5x4.5 is in inches then it would be 5 x 114.5 in mm which should make the rims ok for my 91 n/a. True?

The MR2 rim size is 114.3 not 114.5!

That's correct. It is 5 bolt x 114.3 mm apart.

I was just saying, it's 114.3, not 114.5 like he posted.

But yes, 4.5 inches is the same as 114.3 mm, so it could be the right size.

as far as the rim diameter... 17s will fit

BUT, offset needs to be taken into consideration with wheel width, not diameter.

how wide are these rims? this should help everyone help you

17x7 +48 will fit, but it will look ridiculously tucked in. That will actually be more tucked in the rear than your stock wheels.

Ideally, you wanna have a staggered set-up for the MR2, but if your budget won't allow it, you could always get spacers. I don't care for them myself, but I've seen people have some success with them.

These wheels will definately need spacers! Some big ones!

If it were me, I'd save up and get some staggered wheels. If you search the MR2 board, there are usually some people selling some decent used ones. You'll thank yourself after it's all said and done.

Well, best of luck!

Thanks much for the help. I'm not too "up" on what's good or not in the wheel category. Just so I'm clear again, the staggered wheel you are talking about is staggered offset front to rear? If so, what difference would you suggest. Appreciate the help. Thx.

The MR2 is intended to have a staggered wheel set-up. Meaning wider rims and tires in the rear than the front.

The MR2 comes stock with wheel widths of 5" in front and 6" in back, rim diameter depends on the year. 14's for 91-92, and 15's for 93-95.

The offset of the rims determines how far the rims stick out from the hub. Quick rule, the lower the offset, the further they stick out. Most MR2 owners try to find rims that sit as close to flush with the fenders as possible, without rubbing of course.

I've seen many different styles and set-ups used on the 2. Some look good, and others I don't care for. It's all determined by the owner's preference and budget.

Your budget should probably be the first thing to consider. How much do you really wanna spend on wheels/tires/installation?

Once you know how much you can spend, you can go from there. Do you want wheels that are flush with the fenders? or is it ok if they're tucked a little? Are you willing to roll the fenders? Do you want staggered rims/tires, or will you use spacers to fill the gaps?

There's a lot that goes into selecting wheels that are right for you. All I can suggest is take your time and once you make up your mind what you want, don't settle for anything less. If you do, you'll only hate yourself later for wasting money.

Best of luck to ya, and feel free to ask anymore questions you might have!
Frank

Great advice. I just became a helluva lot more knowledgeable in a short time. Also glad I didn't pursue some of these "great" deals.

HAHA! What did I write? 5 and 6?

Very sorry for my blunder. Drifting Dane is correct. Stock wheel widths for the MK2 are 6" front and 7" rear.

Thanx for setting me straight Dane and for being so gentle about it.
