i have a 1992 toyota MR2 2.2 and am having trouble to get it to start...it drove fine yesterday and then today it sounds like its trying to start but just wont do it. ive noticed alot of people have this same problem with there MR2s and was wondering if theres a solution besides guessing and spending alot of money on parts that really arent needing replacement...also when i try to start it i can smell gas so i know thats not the problem...i dont think its getting any spark....so far ive only replaced the ignition coil and still have problems....any help would be greatly appreciated.....or even the diagnostic codes would be great to have....ty to all that help
so you've replaced the ignitor coil and still no spark.... I'd then have to say it's either your distributor, rotor, cap, wires , plugs. start at the distributor....have it tested, if possible, prior to buying any other parts.. cause mine did the exact same thing... took me up the road one minute, then wouldn't start the next. I had a bad distributor (195k miles on it though)....
good luck
what about the distributor itself??? that was my problem, and if you've already changed the rotor, coil, cap, and plugs.. and still have no spark I'd have the distributor tested. like I had posted before, mine just crapped out on me one day. like flipping a switch. and I changed everything except the distributor thinking it was still good. I think auto-zone \ advanced auto \ pep boys \ and o'riley can test your distributor... that's what I would do before dropping any more cash.... cause I'm a cheap bastard
well i went and got a diagnostic manual and tested it and it said the igniter module was bad....lol so i bought one put it in still no spark....did the test again still bad so my guess would be the wire going from the igniter to the ECU....ne suggestions?? i dont think its my distributor but im having 2 mechanics come over tomm to see if they can figure it out
it is possible... I dislike electrical problems... maybe a wire is loose, possibly a short, or just a bad connection... might also be a fuse... there are alot of variables.... hope it starts soon.
First put a fresh battery in it. Mine would spin for a long ass time before starting with a slightly weak battery. If that doesn't help then look at the capacitor *inside* the distributor and replace it. Good luck!
lol well i found the problem after the ignition coil, ignition module, cap, rotor....the ground wire from the igniter thats goes to the ecu isnt grounded...just thought i would let u guys know lol in case ur mr2 dont start to not forget to check the ground...cant believe i overlooked that but wont happen again....thanx for everyones help if u ever need help just lemme know i have a diagnostic manual that could help...if i woulda listened to the book i woulda found it alot earlier
oh i know its 2 years old i was hopin someone still would read it though. but no i just think its gonna have to get a new ecu now. sucks soo bad.. this car has been nothing but a royal pain in my ass .. had it for like 4 years its ran a good 4-6months at a time maybe less than that.. due to retarded stuff like this..
basically here it is.. its a 1991 turbo mr2.. built motor.. gen 2 , bored .20 over.. JE pistons.. etc.. head is race spec.. anyways.. its on the road for at the most 5months at a time.. before something breaks..
this time its got no spark whatso ever. have done all the BGB trouble shooting . replaced distributor, D-cap, Ignition coil, ignition module, wires/ plugs NGK's , and just recently the ignitor it self.. still no spark .. checked all connections. they are fine .. voltage is going to and from teh coil to the dist.. but nothing comes out no spark .. could it be a ground.. ? like running to the ECU? or maybe the last thing on my mind the ECU itself.. this car has been the biggest money pit ever.. 2built motors. first one was built to stock. that went bad then got a hold of a 2nd gen longblock.. built as istated above.. everything was blue printed and done by a professional machine shop. but that has not the issue.. why am i not getting spark. ive tried to get a hold of a couple of my friends that roll in mr2 turbos but so far no calls back. just to see if we could swap their ecu for mine to see if thats what the problem was. but no luck .
do you have any thing that might cause this to happen?
So you're losing voltage betwwen the coil and the distributor? No spark after that point?
That is puzzling. maybe you're right about the ECU...I would say do what you are planning or take it to Toyota and have a diagnostic run. maybe they can pin point it that way. Sorry i'm not much help, but you have already covered the bases I would have.
yeah we worked on it for 8hours had a buddy of mine thats a mechanic. come over he' owns a supra so he knows alot about yota's and has worked on a lot of mr2's too. but we came up with the same understanding but it didnt hurt to troubleshoot it again just to make sure we didnt miss anything. so its gonna be either the ECU or a short in the wiring harness. but more than likely the ecu. so were shopping for a new one but also trying to get some local mr2 ppl to come and see if we can test their ECU in the car but no one is responding. so were out of luck.. iguess. and kinda questionable about getting a ECU off of ebay .. cause you dont always know if it works or not .. so we shall see where this takes us.. thanks for all your help though i apprieciate it
