Cool Boost Controllers

I was thinking about buying a boost controller for my MR2 and installing it when i go to pick up my baby in a month or so...

I was looking at the turboXS MBC, any opinions on these? can i accurately turn up the boost without an aftermarket boost gauge? ease of installation and price are both plusses... any help on these is great.

I was comparing the above boost controller to the A'pexi AVC-R (I or II, doesnt matter all that much). how hard is the installation of these units? any opinions here? I know price is a big factor, but are end results similar (like if i set them both to 13 psi, how would they compare on the same setup)? If i upgrade turbos later, can i use the MBC on that as well?

any help in this dept. would be great.

need to beat those VA guys

If you are going to get a MBC.... get the twos r us mbc @ http://twosrus.com. TurboXS is more expensive.... and I've heard several people have problems with boost spike using them.

The nicer thing about the EBC's is that you can control the 'gain'.... or how fast your turbo will spool. I'm using a Greddy Profec B and it works great. I used to use the twosrus MBC and loved it.... I got the EBC for free so..... I switched.

how hard was that profec B to install? i assume most electronic boost controllers need the same things when hooking them up...

I have heard that MBCs (in general) keep boost spike to a minimum, whereas electronic ones have a harder time (confirm/deny).

ps- any chance you still got that twosrus MBC laying around?

I'm using the same boost controller as Ish. the Greddy Profec II.after I set the proper gain-no boost spikes at all. and i'm squeezing 15.2 psi out of the CT26. I really like that i was able to set boost from inside the cabin. I haven't had to mess with it since. i paid $280.00 for it off ebay.
by adjusting the gain and boost you can get a faster spool up and a more steady consistant boost. ex.- my hi boost is set at 95% and gain is at 90%...low boost at 75% and gain at 70%...works great!!

You said you are "going to get" your car.
Is this a new MR2 for you or do you have any histroy with it?

If you are just buying it, I would do a tune up with new Toyota cap, rotor, wires and plugs. A new air filter, fuel filter and oil change would be a great idea.

Then I would spend a good month or two getting used to the car to make sure there are no other problems. It would be a bad idea to just throw a boost controller on there and start changing things until you have an idea of what you got.

Just my 2 psi. Good luck with your car.

Oh, if you recall, i blew my 5sfe (about a year ago :/) and i am in line (#2) with Dave at mr2warehouse to get my gen.2 swap (since gen.3 parts are more difficult to come by, and i will certainly be racing it). I am familiar with MR2s, and their ummm.... handling characteristics (although i am changing to a 93+ rear crossmember, so ill have to start the learning process all over again) .

All those tune up parts are OEM toyota (other than an A'pexi intake) and are coming with my swap (except the spark plugs which are NGK coppers).

I will take what you said into consideration though... i see where you are coming from (when i first got my MR2, i was on a drifting craze, so i went to an abandoned parking lot and pushed my car(and myself) to its limits over and over until i got used to ) enough of my blabbing....

I still would like to know how difficult it is to install an electronic boost controller, whether i get it soon, or in the winter...

I'm pretty sure all of us installed our own. MR2BAD gave me a few pointers... so I think he did his.... and I can't imagine Allen being THAT lazy.

It basically works like this.... there are two pieces to the controller. The piece in the cab, and the piece that stays in the engine bay. You run one vac line from your compressor housing to the piece in the engine bay.... another from that piece to the wastegate actuator. Then you run a positive pressure line from your FPR to the cab. THEN... you just do all of the electrical lines.... power and ground to the boost controller.... then there is a harness that goes to the engine bay.

If you need help when you get it.... we can all help in walking you threw it. Plus Greddy has instruction PDFs on their web site.

I was refering more to the condition of your engine than your ability to drive it

Oh, i suppose i misread a bit... all of these clips that are coming in GB #5 have had leakdown and compression tests and were pulled out of operational vehicles. One of the clips im looking at getting either has 33xxx miles or 39xxx miles...

So with all these precautions i hope that im getting a quality peice of machinery (reliable)...

In any case, I'd probably keep boost at stock for a while (and just adjust the gain) especially since i have to drive it over 1000 miles home...

Ok, im leaning toward the AVC-R, so i wen to their site and read up on it here: http://www.apexi-usa.com/pdf/technic...tation/200.pdf

there it says that all i need to do is hook up IG power, rpm/injector signal, two grounds, throttle signal, and speed signal. Is this correct? It says nothing about vaccum/pressure lines in there at all like ish said about the profec B...

DO these boost controllers just work differently? Use different signals and such?

I'm jealous.... I like the Greddy and it's simplicity, but would've really prefered the Blitz or the one u got
