1990 MR2 2.0 Turbo Conversion?

Is it possible on an MR2 2.0 1990 to fit a turbo charger on there as there is MR2 turbos that exist? What sort of work would be involved in doing one? Would I be better off getting a MR2 Turbo? Just that I own a NA 2.0 MR2 and was thinking of doing a turbo charger on the engine as I have the car for ages and spent £££ on it.

the 3sge and 3sgte share many components... if you can find an exhaust manifold, turbo, intercooler (aka aftercooler), piping, exhaust, and ecu you should be doing pretty well.

price all that and compare it to the price of whatever mr2 turbo you are thinking about. (take into consideration the work envolved)

will the 3sge engine hold up against forced induction as well as the 3sgte?? and will they fit the 3sgte tranny?

I beleive all major engine components of these engines are the same (my reasoning is that the aftermarket products fit BOTH 3sge and 3sgte).

Since these engines share the same block (with a small and obvious difference: there are no pre-plumbed oil passages and piston oil coolers, there is no strength difference) and will therefor bolt right up to the 3sgte tranny.

I've heard that the 3sgte will bolt to the 5sfe tranny.. is this true? if so, I might as well start looking for a 3sge engine and a turbo tranny!! the engines are under $500, and if they'll fit my tranny... that might be the way to my turbo mr2!

yes, the 5sfe tranny will bolt up to the 3sgte... as far as that engine, i would try and get a 3sge from an MR2 (imported NA engine)... those may be the same engine, but im not sure... (well they are obviously 3sge's but there may be differences... the things i posted above are true among MR2s and thats the extent of my knowledge.)

You mean '91?
As far as I know, there is no '90 MR2.

Anywho... buy a GTE rear clip and sell the GE.

"released mid-year in 1990"
Which would make it a model year '91 =P

If you live in an area which isnt hardcore about emissions testing (or you have someone who can... help you out with that) you should snag a JDM mill. They are better in almost every way, easier to find and cheaper. Im told bringing a JDM to USDM spec for emissions is super hard, so if you need to pass that smog all legit like, go for a USDM. I would start by checking junkyards within an hours drive (or more... its up to you).

If you buy on EBay make SURE you are buying from someone with either very high feedback or who is known well on some automotive forum somewhere.
