Question US 5sfe --> to jap 3sfe

I've been looking for some decent engines lately, and have found a few on ebay that say they are interchangable with the 5sfe in my mr2... in the pictures shown on the auction, there apears to be a few extra pulleys on the t-belt side... and this bothers me. if the blocks are the same (aside from one being 2.0 and another being 2.2) then I could simply reuse my 5sfe alt. and just get a new oil\water pump... I'm just wondering if anyone has done this before... I get a result from searching, so I thought I'd ask prior to dropping the cash.... thing is I need a running douce prior to the 1st of sept... I "will" be going to NADC (nashville auto diesel college) ... any help or suggestions (other than a turbo swap!! ) would help immensly.
thanks

Why are you against a GTE swap?

I have absolutely nothing against the 3sgte swap... I just can't afford it currently after paying for school... (which starts in a few weeks) I simply need something with low miles that will last a long time, and is relatively quick to swap.. like I posted above, there are a few on ebay with 40-60k miles... and given that they are the same thing as my 5sfe (just less displacement) I would think with regular maintanace they would last just as long... I just need to get my car up and running prior to the 1st of sept.

anyone ever done this swap?
thanks for the help

here's another question: what's this pulley assembly on the far left for??? I know on my 5sfe the alternator is there. and the a\c was up front... could this be an oil or water pump pulley??

I always thought the oil and water pumps were driven by the t-belt.

but my 5sfe's water and oil pump are t-belt driven... and the auction states these are replacements for the 92-95 mr2 2.2L ... so I'm just making sure things aren't super different! thanks for the info.

here's a photo of the 3sfe \ 5sfe water pump... with a "kog" or ribbed pulley... for the timing belt. that's why I'm wondering about that "mystery" pulley on the above photos...

I think I figured it out... the "mystery pulley" part at least.... since these engines are from front wheel drive donors... I believe this is the power steering pump... looks similar to one's I've seen in camrys... so I'm going to order one asap and start the install soon... I'll let everyone know how it goes.
thanks again for the help... and definately let me know if anyone has any more info on this swap.

My co-worker has a 91 mr2 with a jdm 3sfe in it, its not bad...no power gain, no power loss......basically use the long block of the jdm 3sfe and using the 5sfe intake manifold to keep all the emissions...believe me it works..I won't believe it unless I seen it myself....

thanks Camdaddy... that makes me feel ALOT better about doing this swap... I knew there wasn't any power gains, but I was seriously questioning the whole "replacement" thing... I couldn't see how the 2.0 would just drop in where the 2.2 was...
so did he use his stock 5sfe harness?? and I'm assuming I'll have to use my 5sfe manifold simply because the 3sfe's has an egr block-off plate... were there any fuel mods needed? any ignition problems?
thanks again

Yes its power steering pump. All S series will drop in and bolt-on to stock engine mounts. Worse case you reuse all electronic from your 5S and just use the 3S block.
