well, what is to explain? i've used 'just whatever' in one of my Toyotas in the past when i was advised against it. well, i build engines, so when i went to tear the particular engine down, i saw first hand what kind of deposits were where and saw what different things like what a good (or bad) brand/grade of petrol can and does to the internals of an engine. same goes for coolant. besides, Toyota red is like $11/gallon as compared to what, $8/gallon or so for the the 'generic' Prestone or Zerex or whatever is of the shelf? and anything that is long life or environmentally friendly is even more. so, where is the real savings? i mean, other than being able to get that stuff at Wal-Mart @ like 2:30 AM, why bother? you'll have a net savings of like $1.30USD. why not use the stuff engineered for your engine? the generic stuff is full of different things like silicates and other chemical compounds. look in your owner's manual, it states what kind/type of coolant Toyota vehicles require. the Toyota red is engineered to work with your vehicle. ever see a blown radiator? ever notice what kind of coolant is in it? most that i have ever seen have had some sort of green crap in it...and look closely, look at all of the garbage that is sitting in/on/around the fins (on the inside) when the side of the radiator is busted out. i don't ever recall seeing a Toyota vehicle with a split radiator that had Toyota red in it. sure, there are exceptions to every 'rule' and there are people who swear by whatever and there are other mitigating circumstances that can help maintain on green or red, but by-and-large how could you lose by going with what was specifically engineered for your vehicle?
