I wouldn't even think about buying wider axles if I were you. They are expensive, you'll have the hastle in finding what works with mr2's, then you're also increasing the risk of oversteer. A set of nice rims and tires will cost quite a bit. Look along the lines of a few grand, unless you can find some good used wheels. To best answer your question....go get some price quotes yourself and see what type of wheel you like, then go from there. As long as you are moving, you won't have any problem turning the wheels. Bigger wheels and tires means more rubber surface area on the pavement, which improves grip. So you'll have better handling as well, so it's a tradeoff.
