2nd Generation My first MR2 wipe out.

I haven't had this car for very long, and it has already put me in my place.

I was playing a little "cat & mouse" with my friend in his 91 CRX that has a complete suspension upgrade. Of course, I was in my 92 MR2 Turbo with completely SHOT suspension. We were racing on some winding back roads through the mountains and I was the "cat". I caught up to him with no problem (thanks to the turbo), on the straight stretches, but once we would get around a hard turn, I would have to slow down in fear of loosing the back end, while he took the turn like a champ and proceded in sticking his arm out the window to "flip me off".

There is this one uphill turn that I'm very familiar with. I have taken this turn hard, many of times in my Toyota Paseo, but when I tried to show him up in the MR2, the back end slid out from behind me. I quickly turned the wheel the other way to regain control, only to have the car do a complete 180 on me into the other lane. Fortunately, the car remained on the road the entire time, and there were no other vehicles or pedestrians present.

The crappy part about it, was the fact that I didn't even take the turn that hard. I hope the handling gets better when I replace the SHOT suspension with something more sporty. I would hate to think that my Paseo handles better than my MR2. Aren't these cars supposed to have somewhat superior handling? Then again, I guess any car would handle poorly with completely shot suspension.

I am glad you're alright and didn't total your car or something. You definetely need to update you suspension before you start cornering and stuff. When you do, that little honda is in for a rude awakening.

At first i had the same problem, you think you got then....... the sudden 180 especally with all the weight being in the back once you lose it its basically gone. i just got some new tires, and struts and it is more controllable now but i am still waiting on suspension.

MRs have a tendancy to produce snap oversteer.
Meaning when you correct one oversteer, if you over correct, you'll end up "snapping" into an oversteer on the opposite (or reflected, actually) angle.
This is actually a really nice way to do multiple drifting.
If you've ever read Initial D, the way tak does doubles is by using snap oversteer.
Professional drifters (Like in Formula D) also use this alot.
But it's very hard to control, due to the snapping action.

But anywho, once you replace the suspension your problems should go away. Just make sure to set it up right and tune the setup at an auto-x (or in an empty parking lot =P ).

With a proper suspension setup you should be beating the CRX on the straights and downright rocking it through the corners.
What you should do is practice some drifting, then when you race your buddy again charge hard into a sharp corner and do an outside braking pass (otherwise known as a running drift). Of course, you could probably just skip the theatrics... but you would certainly surprise your friend if oyu pulled it off
