MR2 Hard top

hi guys, im considering buying the new shape mr2, but was wondering, i see you can get a cover and trolley to store your hard top in when taken off and hang in your garage for example, but does the hard top fit in the boot?

i thought you meant hardtop, as in fixed roof (no t-top or sun roof)...

but it looks like you're talking about the 2000+ model MR2...

i think you can only store your hardtop in your garage or your house when you arent using it; its pretty big..

p.s. the MR2 bearly has a boot, i think you cant even fit 2 bags of groceries in it...

the MR2 comes with a dealer-installed folding soft top, that folds down, and gets out of the way, but is also removable, if you'd ever want to...

also, NO hardtop will ever fit in the boot of the car it was meant for..

unless it's a folding hardtop, in which case you can get a Mercedes SLK, Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder, Lexus SC430, etc...

that might be a good choice if you're looking into cheap open-air cruising (Del Sol is targa top), but if you're looking for a cheap, sports car, i suggest a Miata, or even a 2nd generation MR2 turbo T-bar...

either way, good luck..

decided i realy like the mr2 to much so def want one, looked at some garages and they list them as "hard top fitted", this mean it comes with hard top that can be removed or its a hardtop and cant be removed? any idea a good cheap place for hard tops if this is the case?

hard top can mean two things in an MR2..

for the 1st two generations (AW11, SW20), it means a roof without t-tops or a sunroof...

these are structurally the strongest, and lightest...

in the 3rd generation, it's a removable hardtop, made to convert the vehicle into a pseudo coupe...

Razo is right on the money with the info. I looked into getting the hard top and they want about 2k for it. it will have to be stored at home or such. I do like the convertible without a motor. it goes up or down in about 10 seconds. tho i rarely drive with it up. bad blind spot back there. storage is also almost non existent. I can carry 2 small over night bags in the compartment behind the seat and a little bit up front with the spare. it's just for drivin". but it's a kick to drive. just under powered...I like my '91 turbo wayyyy better...

wouldn't a removable hard top still be stiffer and lighter than a regular convertible?

^---i see how it'd be stiffer, but i dont see how it'd be lighter if you're adding a hardtop..

well, i never owned a convertible, but i know some cars (don't know about the mrs) have motors for the top, im pretty sure is possible to have a light hardtop, if the regular convertibles have heavy motors or something. again, i dont own a convertible, so i can't compare. and i don't think mrs have that motor convertible thing going on. i would expect a manual convertible to be lighter, but you never know. i never expected to see a van beat a viper, but i've seen it.

as far as I know, motor drive convertibles are not an option for the Spyder, MRS. I would also think the convertible would be lighter than an added hard top. I believe the hard top is an addition to the convertible. so you would have both, which would make it heavier. unless you remove the convertible set up yourself.
now where stiffness is concerned, the MR2 Spyder has a very stiff chassis. it's probably one of it's best qualities. I can personally vouch for flat line cornering on this critter. and they sell aftermarket suspension parts to stiffen it even further.I love the way it handles. it's just underpowered. but that can be changed too.
