Gen1 Mk1's with aftermarket air intakes

how many people have aftermarket intakes on their mk1's... how does driving in the rain affect it? i've been kicking around the idea of putting a k&n on mine... but i'm not sure...i have a stock 85 n/a....

well, seat of the pants dyno says ok. sounds good too. usually, one has to 'trim' the engine cover and then add a splash shield over the cone.

thanks for your opinion... my friend had a k&n on his mitshubishi and it would stall out the engine cause it sucked in too much air... why is that? and could that be a problem with my car? what does too much air cause?

btw...

i'm doing an engine lid mod as well.. but you'll all see that when i'm finished with it

i haven't seen anyone do it yet... so we'll see it should help for ventelation as well... picking up the lid to start on tomorrow

I have a cone on a relocated AFM. Sounds decent, and one site online states a 5hp increase with any cone over the stock restrictive intake setup! Sounds like a lot to me, but it must be true cause I read it on the internet

I have a 88 mr2 with a K+N cone filter, but it's located in the trunk.

Gen1 Mark 1 K&N cold air intake installation

I just installed a K&N model 57-0120 cold air intake on my '87 n/a.

The kit only came with one (straight) silicone hose to attach between the air flow meter and the K&N cone filter.

I would need another hose to attach between the throttle body and the air flow meter.

I only had 2.5" left before the cone filter would interfer with the left rear strut housing.

Instead, I decided to use the kit's hose between the throttle body and air flow meter, then I reused one of the stock elbow hoses (the smooth one with one end larger than the other) facing down.

I attached the cone filter onto the end of this elbow hose.

The filter is in front of the original intake pipe coming from the trunk (I don't know if any air is fed through it at speed). I ran the cold air tube from the kit to feed air to the other side of the filter.

The filter is just above and to the rear of the transmission--facing down.

I don't normally run my Two in the rain (I have another vehicle for that) so I may never know if this set-up will stay dry in the rain.

bawhahaaaaa... sounds more like your friend didnt hook something back up when he removed the stock air box.

no you wont have a problem. the amount of air into the engine is determined by your throttle body.

look forward to seeing what you are doing.
