i am trying to install a MSD ignition(p.o# 6200 6A) on my 86 mr2 n/a and after i connect all the wires. i try to give the engine a crank. it turns on but dies less than a second later. does any one know what the problem might be??
THX for the info. i went to auto to see if they had it and theyu had two that i could install. one had to do with a magnetic pick up and the other had said something about a white wire pick up. which do i use??
He's using the MSD 6A ignition amplifier. That is the one without the rev control I think. I have a MSD 6AL unit and it has the soft rev limiter built in. I have yet to put one in a MR2 though. JUst waiting to get mine.
oops, my tired old ass missed that! yeah, it's w/o the rev limiter. 8910 eis is the one, i think. it's the encapsulated one. word to the wise! keep that tach adaptor un-obstructed and let it breathe! it gets really hot! i think i used the white whire. lemme go check!
however... toyota ignition is stout. Originally when i wired up my 4age in the corolla (smallport) i used a 6al, 8910eis, and blaster 2..... when i took all of that out and put a stock coil in, the car ran better & smoother.... the MSD was actually hindering performance.
i had originally bought my 6al from a good friend who drives a 92 gsr.... he pulled it out some years back because, for him too, it did nothing but add weight.
if you plan to go boost, then there's good reason to keep it.....

That is good to know. I was thinking about selling mine to a buddy and was trying to think if I wanted to keep it for the MR2 I will be getting.
DO you really think it is not worth it? ALso I was planning on getting a 93 MR2 turbo. Whe I put it in my newwer dodge it actually helped a bunch, even with milliage. Of course that is like comparing an apple and a llamma.
like i said.... toyota ignition systems are pretty stout..... an msd blaster 2 coil will throw a spark out about 3-4".... a stock toyota coil will throw it out around 3" or so...
MSD (ie, multiple spark discharge) helps on boosted motors where the ignition system is failing (helps cause knock or detonation) the very fast multiple sparks will help make sure the spark is igniting whats in the chamber

ok, the Blaster coil is completely useless here...without MAJOR work (e.g.; changing from internal to external coil).
under high boost situations, the ignition amplifier is a great tool to help the flame kernel not get blown out.
so what if i just add the 6A without the blaster coil?? would that still be the same situation. because i was just adding the 6A with the 8910 and call it a day

huh? 4ag's don't use an internal coil.......
