MR2 parts inquiry

Hey guys-

I just got an '88 MR2 supercharged last week, and I am curious if anyone knows any good websites to get aftermarket parts for those? I really like the car, and I think it has the potential to be a very fast. I am actually considering selling my 11 second Talon to have more money and time to invest in this one. Any help any of you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

i think that you should keep your 11 sec talon...the mr2 will never reach that potential unless you have really deep pockets....it would take quite a bit of work IMO just to get an mk1 into 12s....even with mk2s, it takes some time and money....not quite bang for your buck as DSMs are....

i will agree that for drag racing the MkI SC will probably be very disappointing to you...funny i say that and i drive an 89 SC. anyway, on a road course, i would say ditch the dsm quickly! there are people making MkI's extraordinarily fast by removing the turbocharger and going turbo. however, there is new work being done with the SC14 (larger SC) which is leading me to believe that staying SC is still my best choice.

i wouldn't be surprised if brent picasso's mk1 (85) 4agte (running on megasquirt & spark), with a t25 (230whp and 220wtq) is in the 12's......

in any case...... you can get bigger crank pulleys & smaller s/c pulleys (to increase the boost).... higher compression pistons.... different head, & internals......

Hey guys-

Yeah, thanks for the advise, I will probably keep the Talon and just do the MR2 also. Fortunately I have sorta deep pockets at the moment since I just sold my Integra and my rocket. I am looking into doing internals on the AW11 and twin-charging it with a custom exhaust manifold and not sure what turbo yet. Do you by chance know where you can get a hold of an SC14, toyotatechgeek? If so, what would be nice too. Either way, I am pretty sure this car will get into at least the low 12's eventually. thanks again everyone!

Twincharging... damn I hope you know what you're doing =P
If you are going to twincharge, you are better off staying with the SC12.

Yeah, I am actually a pretty experienced tech myself. I did all my work on my Talon too, and I work on Toyotas daily, so I think this will be an easier project than my Talon was. Yeah, I probably will stick with the SC12 and just get some pulleys for it. I only really need enough power to get me to the point the turbo starts to spool up, and I am going ball-bearing so that won't have to be that long. Thanks again everyone.

u think that twin charging an MK1 is gonna be an easy project....theres less than a handful that exist and are running.....good luck with this and keep us updated on your progress....HKS used to make a twin charge kit but i'm not sure if you'll even be able to find one for sale used...

Hey,

Yeah, I definitely know this will not be an easy project, and I know there is a lot of stuff you have to do to twin-charge a car that most people do not even realize, but I am prepared to put a lot of time into this one. The HKS kit is not accessible anymore if you are curious, as there were only 5 imported to the US, and four are currently on cars in the US. I will be going more of the custom route, and I actually think that would be cheaper considering the rarity of the kit you mentioned. Thanks again, and I will definitely keep you guys posted on my progress. I already have about half the necessary parts and all the internal parts which will be installed over the winter (pistons, custom rods, full valvetrain and headwork, and other necessary modifications).

headwork isn't necessary outside of some matchporting. maybe even a bit of attention to the coolant passages underneath (valve area) because of casting flash. yamaha helped with the damned near perfect head design. anyway, a little bit of lower-end gain can be found in the valve seats/valve. now, as far as the twincharging goes, HKS didn't get it 'right'. the problem lies in the switch-over from the SC to T. i know someone nearby who did a twincharged 4AG-E with an SDS ems, but you know, he bragged about it, but one doesn't really hear a peep out of him much after it was assembled. so, yeah, ems is a MUST have, but finding one with the ability to control all of the things happening all at once may be the trick. good luck!
