There is a Park Neutral Position Switch on the side of the transmission. You can find diagrams of it in the Transmission section. For the 5SFE, page AX1-94 shows the test proceedure for the switch. It makes contenuity between two terminals in reverse. This may be what clues the system to turn on the indicator and reverse lights.
