I'm sure you can make the 4x4 switchable, but IMO, it won't make that much of difference because you'll still be carrying around the extra weight of the front differential and other 4x4 components. To get better mileage I would say keep your LC well maintained, keep your tires properly inflated, use synthetic oil, diff fluid, gear oil etc. and that should give you an extra 1-2 MPG better mileage.
