After looking around myself, I can tell you.....the rebuild option isn't cheap, unless you do it yourself. The replacement option is there, but you'll likely end up with a 3sfe (I think 2.0 motor) I tried risingsunmotors and some others, a "bolt in replacement" runs about 1k. (plus shipping) and they'll quote you the 2.0 instead of the 2.2 so keep that in mind.
I've gotten quotes for rebuilds anywhere from 2k and up. (if you have the money, its not THAT bad) If you can do it yourself, you can usually slide in under the 1k mark, depending on how much machining you need. I know the autoparts stores around here sell the "kit" for 600 bucks, although I'm not sure what all that includes. If you have the time and space, and the knowhow, I'd go for the "do it yourself" option personally.
You can find engines online though, if you want to just replace it. Sounds like you have some clue how to do the job yourself, which should help cut down on costs though. Good luck, and keep us posted.
