I too did not consider the middle seat when looking at the car. However, we have a 3 month old and I have her seat in the rear passenger side seat using the latch system. Plenty of room and I don't have too many concerns given the amount of room and the number of side airbags. I realize that the center position would probably best, but I don't think the current configuration is "unsafe." Hopefully, I'll never have to find out for sure!
As a back up plan you may consider using the shoulder belt to secure the car seat base in the center seat. My old car did not have the latch system and I had to use the seat belt. Worked pretty well.
