try to find out if the engine has been overheated(run hot) because this weakens the headbolts and makes damaging easier. Even if repairs have been done, still avoid anything that has been overheated.
A good clue an engine has been overheated is a cleaner head than block, aftermarket head /exhaust / intake gaskets hanging out(factory ones are hidden pretty good) Another thing to peek at is the oil pan bolts, does it look like a wrench has been on them? if so it may have spun a bearing and have a patched repair job. all these are standard things to look for on any vehicle you wish to buy
