'92 revs, not moving

I have a 92 prizm with a 3 speed auto. The problem started with a loud pop, but the car drove fine for about 10 miles. The next time it was started it wouldn't move, it just revved. Later I tried driving the car to my house and made about six miles before it revved with no movement. You could hear a whine that went up with revs while it was moving. I shut it down, let it sit for about 15 minutes and tried again. It drove for about a quarter mile before it wouldn't move again. It's been sitting for a few months and now has a whine that seems to rise with rpm's, but will drive fine for a short distance. Then the engine revs, but the car won't move. It acts like it's in neutral. Someone said it was the differential, but I'm looking for other opinions. Thanks
