The fan box has one or more blender doors in it that move around to direct the air flow (either hear or AC, it doesn't matter). The door(s) can get stuck with crud or the blender motor can fail, a linkage can break or the switch can fail. If you have the push button type selectors for vent/floor/face/def then you will have the switch and motor to check. If you have the slide lever then you will have a cable connecting directly to the blend door lever. The manual goes into this in the Body Electric section (BE 52 for the 1990 model).
