You probably have a wire that is grounding the field on your alt. Check your wireing harnes betwene your alt and the regulator cut the wire loom off and check the wires inside.

Stumped

I was told the regulator is in the alt, but dont know. I can tell you there only the ign coil is on the drivers side where the wire loom leads, also splits and goes around the radiator to the other side. where are the grounds to the eng and chassis?

Sorry You have a internal regulator. You might have goten a bad alt to replace the old one. Take it to your local Checker auto parts and thhy will ge able to check (for free) and see if it is bad. I got two bad regulators in a row from a parts store.

The truck will not start now I think it fried the coil, turns over good but won't run. Gotta go to the parts store for that, will check the alt while there. Thanks.
