My 91 yota 22re 4x4 5spd has been acting up lately. When it does decide to start It was overheating. The coolant was playing a nice little disappearing act. I checked the dipstick to see if it looked runny, bam! I figure its the headgasket? The oil looks like foamy chocolate milk... yoohoo color. Are my assumptions correct? I had filled the radiator with water a while back since its been warm here for a while. Ill post a picture asap

sorry but your assumption is correct. Either head gasket or cracker head . Either way take it down and take the head to the shop for checking and milling if needed. They may also suggest more but thats the basics.

actually in the process, I was looking down the timing cover and there are two 1/8" deep grooves worn in. Took off the water pump and you could actually see where the timing chain had been cutting through. took off the timing cover and my drivers side guide wasnt even bolted in anymore. suprise suprise! ordered a new timing set today with metal guides and bought a new TC. hopefully she all buttons up. Im just P.Od cause i took the intake off to pull the head... for the head gasket. i need to staple it all back together.

I was just going to ask you. Did you check the timing cover!

Well at least you only pulled the intake off, now you can clean all the gunk outa it

At least you didnt remove the head and then realize the timing cover was bad..

What kit did you buy?

I bought the steel guides, TC and timing kit from cnsautoparts on ebay. but now i have more problems. its all stapled back together and the damn thing wont start. guess im not as good a mechanic as i thought.

I'd try bolts instead of staples.

Or at least add some duct tape.

And check to see if the TC and/or distributor is off a tooth or so, could be your no-start problem.

figured it out, the distributor was 180 degrees off... she fired right up. now i just got to tackle all the other problems with this thing. Ive never had more problems with a vehicle. and this thing only has 110k!
