22re cold start trouble

Hi,
my 1995 pickup with 22re seems to all of a sudden have to turn over a bunch more times to start. the problem is even more pronounced in the cold.
I know, cold start injector. that was my thought.
so I unplugged the injector. this shoudl make it the same is if it was a faulty injector i'm thinking.
well it has even more trouble starting with the cold start injector unplugged.
is my logic wrong here?
any ideas what the problem could be?

I've thrown in a bottle of injector cleaner to see if this helps.

well yes it would make the problem worse
if the injector is only spraying 1/2 its better than none! pull the injector and clean it with some carb clean soak it over night and look for a cold start time switch sounds like it may need to be changed as well

makes sense.
the problem seems to be getting worse.
I printed off the pages of the Service manual that deals with the injector and the time switch.
I think I have spares on another engine top. I can swap them but its nasty working in this cold....

On the weekend I went through the entire circuit. pulled it all apart and tested each piece. it all works properly. what I don't see though is how long is the cold start injector supposed to be on for? mine only stays on for 1sec at the most. I think it should spray for 2-4 sec at least.
anybody have an idea of the time range?
I'm ready to rig up my own on circuit. this is ridiculous.
i understand the cold start injector switch is expensive and its hard to get at. I'll simply not use it in my own circuit. it seems redundant anyway.
