I've wanted a pick-up for ages and I've always liked the look of the toyota. It'll be handy for my work as I'm often picking large items up and it's getting too awkward with my car.
I'm totally new to everything pick-up and toyota-wise so I'm planning to learn as much as possible before parting with my cash.
1, How much £'s would a reasonable pick-up set me back here in the UK?
2, Are there any major problems I should look out for when viewing?
I've plenty more questions but the above 2 are the most important for the moment,
Don't know about in the UK, but here in the US frame rust is a big problem with Toyota trucks.
That's the first thing I checked when buying the 2 4Runners I have now.
Yeah, you have many more options there, including importing diesel Toyotas (which are awesome, but all but nonexistent here in the States). Also, RHD Toyotas would be more desirable, as you guys prefer driving on the wrong side of the roads. Plus you have four-door pickups available in older models (89-95, IIRC).
What year range you desire, 4x4 or 2WD, condition, model availability, and engine type are all things that will affect your purchase price, so it's tough for us to gear that from North America. Here, most people in the 85-95 year ranges have 22RE petrol motors, or 3VZE V-6 petrol motors. Again, were I in Europe, and looking at these year ranges, diesel would be the only option for me, barring an incredibly great deal on a petrol.
I've just put a deposit down today on a 1996 Toyota Hilux 2.8L Diesel 4x4 dual cab, which I'm picking up in two days. I'm in Australia, and I'm paying $9,900 (AUD - about $11,000 USD) for it with about 300,000km on the odometer. It is in pretty good condition, with slight surface rust on the tray.
I don't know about prices in the UK, but the best way to find out about prices is to check out a lots of vehicles. You'll get a feel for the price and condition. I spent a week thinking about the features I wanted, wrote a list, and looked on every car sales website, every newspaper, and on ebay to see which ones meet my requirements and budget. It is hard work, but I think I'll be happy with the result.
You might want to think about importing an old yoda from Japan. In Canada, there is a massive market for JDM cars and trucks. There are great deals on the old 4runner diesels, called the Hilux surf.
Do an internet search. I'm not even sure if it is possible in the UK, but money usually talks.
