Help! Bought 96 Hilux yesterday, no power, idling rough today

I bought a 96 Hilux yesterday and it went ok. I never owned a diesel before, and thought it was just a bit under-powered. Driving it today, it almost didn't make it home. Driving in 2nd and 3rd (manual transmission) it struggled badly, and the short return trip home, it almost didn't make it since it started having trouble even in 1st gear.

My friend is a farmer and said it sounds like the injector pump.

Does this sound right to you, and if so, is a replacement expensive?

Ok, I replaced the fuel filter today, changed the oil and flushed the radiator and it runs better for a while, but when going up a slight hill or running the air conditioning, it has very little power and almost dies.

Any ideas?

Problem fixed: it was dirt in the fuel system. It has been flushed out and it runs well :-)
