Help 1985 Toyota and white smoke.

Well everyone let me tell you a little bit about my truck. It's a 1985 22r Toyota pickup. I have had it for about 2 years and have had no problems with it until today. Yesterday I noticed that the coolant was running low so I added some 50/50 that I had at home. And also noticed that the radiator cap was corroded so I replaced that as well. I drove it to the store and it rand great! I drive it to work this morning and it starts billowing white smoke. From the exhaust I believe. Needless to say I shut it down and let it sit a second then tried starting it again and got nothing but a big thud. Any suggestions on what it could be. When I popped the hood nothing was leaking. What should I check when I get home first? Thanks for any help ~ chris

white smoke

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, you have blown a head gasket, the "white smoke" is actually the coolant entering the combustion chamber where the water is flashed to steam. The "smoke" will have a sweet smell for the antifreeze.

Pull the dipstick and check the oil; if it appears "coffee/tan colored" it is another indicator.

Adding coolant/no leaks points to just what I said first the coolant is going out the exhaust.

Also do a compression check; that will tell which cylinders are most affected.

You will have to remove the head and carefully inspect it for damage as well as the cylinder block where they mate together, the head may need machining to bring it back to true and level;

I'm currently doing the exact same thing on a 1989 Cressida.

Use new head bolts, etc.. good luck..

You most likely do have a blown Head Gasket. It would be better not to drive it until it's fixed. The crank bearings, etc, don't like coolant, and if it overheats too much you could crack the head.
