Bought my son a 88 for graduation 22r replaced cat, fix header intake (bolts were shered off) new gasket new fuel pump and filter plugs wires distrubutor rotor. Sounds great runs good untill you hit about 3000 rpms or put a load on it does not matter if it is up hill dwn hill or flat ground. Truck starts to sputter and act like its out of gas, will die completly. Will start again and run as long as you stay under 3000rpms. Please can anybody give me sugestion aon what to look at next?

I had a Mazda P/U that did that, and it needed a NEW carburetor. They said the carb wasn't rebuildable, and a new one was like 850 from NAPA....so I sold that sucker!

88 pickup

At what speed does it begin to spit and sputter?

I would suspect the carb; could be the power piston stuck or the circuit is becoming clogged; a good cleaning/rebuild never hurt.

I dont know anything about rebuilding a carb. I have images of taking it off and springs and screws going every where. I am towing out to friends house to have it worked on. I cant do it by myself, I dont have enough time. But thanks to all who replied.
