High HC Emissions
I have a 1988 Toyota Xtra Cab Pickup with a 5-speed manual transmission that just failed an emissions test with very high HC readings. The limit is 200ppm and the reading on my truck was 1091ppm on the Curb Idle Test! The CO% was perfect, well below the limit. I just bought it a week or so ago from the original owner with fairly low mileage (187,000kms). He said he used carb cleaner on a fairly regular basis. I did a full ignition tune-up before the test, including new plugs and wires, new air filter, new cap and rotor. I ran a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass" with a tank of ethanol fuel through it, plus another 3/4 tank of ethanol before the test as well. It is having some starting issues - half of the time it starts instantly with no problems, but sometimes I need to crank and crank and pump the gas like crazy until it finally turns over. Other than that it runs very well, gets good fuel mileage. I read a post by someone suggesting it could be a ruptured auxiliary accelorator pump diaphragm and/or an automatic choke valve that is stuck closed or partially closed. Any other suggestions?
