Why does my truck make this sound?

Hey all. I have a 1994 Toyota Pickup. I got it not too long ago. Problem is when I am in reverse and start to go faster than five miles an hour, my car sounds like it's making a whirring noise.

any ideas/suggestions.

ALSO, I seem to be getting poor gas mileage... anyone know the typical gas mileage on these?

You don't mean spur gears vs helical gears?

Why would you be going more than 5 mph in reverse? I think I've found your problem, you're commuting in reverse hence bad mileage.

Your reverse has spur gears, sorta boxy linkages so they make this winding sound which is normal. Spur gears are more for strength. Your forward gears use helical gears because they are much quieter though they have less strength compared to spur gears.

As for the gas mileage, since you first go the truck have you made sure it's up to date with maintenance? How bad is your mileage?

+1 on reverse gears being noisy by design. Almost any manual vehicle will go Wiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrr when you back it up.

Trucks dont usually get the best milage, but if you have a 2 wheel drive you should be able to pull off low to mid 20's on the highway with good driving habits.

exactly what do you drive and what motor?

driving the way i do, I get about 23mpg with an auto, xcab, 2wd, 3.41's (from 3.73's) and taller than stock tires.
that's 23mpg uncalculated from the odometer. so I should be getting like... maybe... 25mpg?

that's majority city driving. If I did majority highway driving, I could pull off 26+mpg.

dakotaTimmons,

Is your truck a 4cyl or 6cyl, automatic or manual transmission?

Everyone always seems to get better gas mileage than me. I have a 1992 4x4 V-6 (3VZ-E) Access Cab manual transmission and get about 16-16.5 mpg overall (with 260k miles). Even new my truck only got about 17.5mpg. The original EPA mileage (brand new) on the sticker was 15mpg city and 18mpg highway. Granted we have the crap gas with ethanol (and MTBE before that) so I am probably losing 1-1.5 mpg from that. Anyone know what the rated mpg was for my truck in the non-CA version?

Seeing the OP is from CA the might be suffering bad mileage for the same reasons (CA emissions & smog gas).

P.S. I just checked the 2012 Tacoma 4x4 Access cab V-6 and it is only rated 14mpgcity/18 mpg highway. WTF!I know it has 90 hp more than mine, but really? They can get the new 4Runner to get 22mpg highway with the same engine, but they can't boost the tacoma mileage up to 16/19mpg with a MT!
