my 93 pick (22r-e) has some engine problems.....HELP! Possible rebuild?

So this is my trouble. I have a 93 Toyota pick-up. Its got a 22r-e stuffed in it, and a manual 5 speed tranny. She is a 4x2, and has about 260 on the ticker. Now i've have drove this truck across canada from alberta to southern ontario about 6 times. So she has done her fair shair of work. The last time i drove her home (which was about a year ago) i tryed to start her up at a gas station, and all i got was a large whining sound. Like the starter is just spining, and nothing else.

After looking under the lood, it looks like the engine is turning over, but just not starting. I have spark at the plugs, and i have compression. No other loud noises are happening, and no holes through the side of the engine, so i suspect no major mechanical damage. I just was wondering if other people have encountered this with their 22r-e trucks. My plan is as soon as i get back home to tear down the engine and rebuild it back up. I have the whole summer, tools, and two mechanics to help me out.
Im just wondering if it even needs to be done, and what I possibly could do to get my truck back in working order ASAP.

Before I went and did a rebuild, I'd see if you needed and new starter. Next, signal generators/pick up coil and igniters were some culprits to a no start problem as you describe. It wants to turn over, but not start. I'd look into those before I jumped to a rebuild. some members I believe have had the very same issue with various causes.

UPDATE: Checked the truck out a little more throughly. When you try to start it all the belts turn. So it is not a problem with the starter. I am going to take a peak under the valve cover to check that the timing chain is still in one piece ( the worst case is that the chain is broken and that i will have to replace all the valves, piston heads, and possibly the connecting rods) im hoping its ok, and that its only an ignition issue, or a fuel issue.

Another thing is no major noise is coming from the engine itself when i turn it over. The only major noise is coming from the starter. It just sounds like a high pitch noise.

The normal noise your not hearing is most likely because your chain is busted and your not getting compression to your cylinders. It's not that big of a deal as this is a non-interferance engine. You didn't bend any valves or loose your main bearings... I would guess you've been listening to a tick tick as you're driving for the past 3 - 4 months as your timing chain has loosened up? Check your radiator for brown oily mush, if you don't see clean green you have a hole in your timing chain cover. It's weldable. I'd pay the extra couple of bucks and get a TOYOTA kit, there is a difference.
