1989 trouble PLEASE HELP

I have an 1989 toyota pickup 4 cyl (22r?) 5 speed truck that messed up on me & I know very little about how to diagnose the problem so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was driving on the interstate when the truck started losing power in all gears, eventually it didn't even have the power to keep 1st gear from stalling. I pulled over & the motor was very hot with water boiling etc, after it cooling down several hours I tried to start it. It takes a lot of giving it gas for it to start & when it does it makes a loud clanking noise like nails being shook in a can & still has no power.

I don't have a clue if it's a motor problem or a transmission problem or something else, any help would be great!!

Were you by any chance watching the temperature gauge? If so, how far up into the red did the needle get and for how many minuets/miles were you driving it like that?

I'm sorry to break the news to you but this is gonna be a serious engine issue...
