Clutch issue?

Hello all. New guy here with a very dependable 1991 2wd truck. 200K miles with replaced tranny in 2002 at 80K. At the time, I believe nothing was done with clutch as it was very good. The truck is a very dependable ride.

Here's the symptom: Sits overnight, start up, shift manual into reverse, truck goes into reverse, THEN it's difficult to put shift (stick) back into neutral. I would pump the clutch pedal a little, continue back up a little, and then force stick back into neutral.

I notice this started to happen a year ago, and only when I have to reverse the truck from parking overnight, but has no issues once driving. I'm thinking something is wearing out but don't know where to start checking. I do not have the tools nor knowledge to fix this myself (I think), but would like to be educated enough to know what might be wearing out, and $$ that might be involved.

Thank you ahead of time, and let me know if you need further info for diagnosis.

dave

Start by checking the level of the fluid in the clutch Master Cylinder.

Another possibility would be the shift lever seat. They dry out with age and fall apart, making shifting difficult.
A search of one of the truck forums should get you info on that.
