I have an 87 4x4 pickup 22re that is carburated. Drove truck the other day and all was fine, buddy drove truck and ran outta gas. Now after putting gas in and getting truck back running i came to stop and truck just cut out like it ran out of gas again, but it has gas in it. I took fuel line off of filter and put in jar tried cranking several times and im not getting any gas to the filter. Checked all fuses in cab and they are good. Any help would be much appreciated.
Does it stay running if you give it just a bit of gas?
Did you check the fuses in the engine bay fuse box?
IIRC that's where the fuse that controls the fuel cut solenoid is.
Yes I have checked all fuses even in engine comp. None were bad. I have read some stuff about making sure I'm getting power by jumping the fp to the b+. Can anybody explain where to start on that process? Thanks
If your can keep it running by dribbling gas in the carb, then the filter, fuel pump or plumbing have a problem.. in that order.
If you're cranking and no gas comes out of the fuel line (good thinking, by the way..) either the filter is clogged or the fuel pump isn't working.
Yes, dribbling gas in the carb is dangerous, but so is a lot of stuff you do. Don't ever do it if the engine backfires!! Starter fluid or WD 40 will also work more safely for a few secs.. proving that the engine has spark.
A rusted fuel line would leak eventually... and would be easy to find.
Yea it does spark and turns over when gas is in carburator. I am fixing to put in pump but got to looking at tank and found that there is the pump and then something else that is wired. Is this just a sending unit or what?
The carbed engine has a mechanical fuel pump, mounted on the engine in front of the carb.
The 2 things in the tank would be the sending unit for the gauge and the fuel pick-up.
There is a site glass in the front of the carb to check the fuel level in the bowl. The level should be in the center.
Easy way to check the fuel pump is to disconnect the pump output hose at the carb.
Run the hose into a small can and crank the engine. One quick crank should put a few ounces in the can.
I know I'm not getting gas to the filter so therefore its not getting to carb.....right? If the pump is on the carb then shouldn't. I hear the sending unit come on when cracking?
If the pump is in the tank, then its an EFI or electronic fuel injected. The extra thingy is the sending unit.. which sends the level of gas to your gauge.
The Haynes Manual is pretty good for 79-95 yota pickups. If the fuses and wiring are OK to the best of your knowledge, swapping the pump would be the next likely step.
I'd probably try to bench test it briefly with a 12v supply (carefully..) once it was out to make sure the pump was really dead vs a wiring or electrical problem.

Ok guys ....found my fuel problem. It was a clogged filter and I also changed out pump . Now I'm getting fuel but it wasn't firing. Took out plug to check and no spark. Any ideas what to do next.
